Security approach
BeThere is built to support school-day phone policies with as little data as practical. We focus on setup status, school association, permission status, phone-free mode status, and whether the school-day policy should apply during the configured schedule and campus area.
BeThere is not designed to read messages, photos, browsing, keystrokes, screen contents, or personal files.
School data separation
Each school's data is separated by school. Staff accounts are scoped to their assigned school and role, so staff at one school should not be able to access another school's student, device, or admin data.
Behind the scenes, BeThere uses database-level protections and application-level checks to help enforce school boundaries.
Data protection
BeThere protects school and student data using standard security practices, including encrypted connections, managed infrastructure, access controls, and audit logs for important actions.
- Encrypted connections for customer-facing services.
- Data stored with managed infrastructure providers.
- Role-based access for school staff.
- Audit logs for important admin and system actions.
- Production access limited to authorized support or engineering needs.
Admin access
School staff sign in with individual accounts. Staff roles determine what a user can see or change. Schools can remove or disable staff access when needed.
Student device safety
BeThere is designed to support phone-free mode during the school day without reading personal content. Emergency calling remains available. BeThere should not read messages, photos, browsing history, keystrokes, screen contents, or app data.
On iPhone and Android, BeThere uses platform-supported permissions and device capabilities where available. Enforcement can vary based on operating system, device ownership, and school-managed versus student-owned devices.
BeThere is designed for BYOD schools without requiring a full MDM rollout. Schools with managed devices may have additional options.
Incident response
If BeThere confirms a security issue affecting a school, we will investigate, take steps to contain and resolve the issue, and notify impacted schools as appropriate.
